Homemade Equipment Durability

0

A person’s home is often their most valuable asset. If it can be destroyed, they are left with nothing. This is why people have to buy new equipment every few years. However, this process is expensive and time-consuming. The average American spends $10,000 on household goods over the course of their lifetime.

Resistance bands are a great way to get in shape. They’re also quite easy to make at home, and they don’t cost much. However, resistance bands can be used for more than just exercise.

It wasn’t in the cards for today’s blog post. I got a nasty email this morning from someone who questioned and attacked the durability of the handmade equipment I’ve shown in previous lessons. His email said, in a nutshell, that handmade equipment is prone to failure and should not be utilized by industry experts.

When I attempted to reply, I got an error message stating that the target email address was invalid and that my message could not be sent. Perhaps the email was sent by an equipment provider who sees my handmade gear as a threat. With his caustic tone and remarks, he may want to stay unknown. It’s unsurprising in today’s world of keyboard warriors.

In terms of my answer, I mentioned in the email that I have no financial ties to any hardware shops. I don’t have any Home Depot stock, and I don’t make any money marketing handmade equipment. And, contrary to popular belief, I despise the process of creating handmade equipment. I will not spend my time if the equipment does not provide specified advantages and/or cost reductions.

I exclusively build equipment that will serve a specific function for myself and the people I teach. I don’t create stuff on the spur of the moment with no rhyme or purpose. Furthermore, I’ve found that handmade gear frequently lasts longer than many commercial equivalents. When compared to an exercise equipment made as cheaply as possible by a big revenue-driven company, it’s not like hardware shops offer components that are more likely to fail.

Obviously, your results may vary depending on the quality of the workmanship, the components used, and other factors, but to imply that all handmade equipment is certain to fail prematurely is absurd. More than half of my gym is filled with custom-built equipment.

The photo below shows my handmade dip/chinning belt easily carrying 180 pounds, taken earlier today. This is the same dip/chinning belt that I showed in a video lesson over a year ago (see here). This belt has been used week after week and is still going strong. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t break the chain. You’ll be hard pushed to locate a commercially available dip belt with a chain as thick as this one.

Homemade-Equipment-Durability

I had a 150-pound dumbbell shatter on me about an hour after shooting the picture from above. Although I was disappointed since this dumbbell had served me well over the years, the timing could not have been better. Clearly, this was a one-off, but handmade gear has a 1-0 lead against its commercial equivalent for the day.

1631456211_332_Homemade-Equipment-Durability

To summarize, don’t dismiss anything until you’ve given it a chance. There are a plethora of DIY alternatives that are just as sturdy as anything you can buy at the local sports goods shop.

Resistance bands are a great way to exercise without the need for expensive equipment. However, they can only last so long before they start to break down. Reference: how long do resistance bands last.

Physical Education From The Past

0

Physical education in the past was a form of exercise and physical development. It was also a way to pass on the culture, traditions, and values of one’s society to future generations.

The physical education before and now is a blog that discusses the history of physical education. It discusses how physical education has changed over time and what it was like before it became as popular as it is now.

The video below features an early physical education curriculum from California’s La Sierra High School. You may be shocked by the physical capabilities of the youngsters in the video when you watch it. Many today’s youth are unaware of the incredible physical power that was often shown in earlier generations. Strength is nothing new, as I’ve stated many times before.

By clicking the picture below, you may view a relevant story from a 1962 magazine (courtesy of this site).

Physical-Education-From-The-Past

As I viewed the movie above, I couldn’t help but wonder how many high school kids nowadays could pull off feats like those shown. Call it a hunch, but I’m thinking it’s a small proportion. Today’s youth choose to play computer games rather than engage in physically demanding activities. Physical education has even been eliminated from the compulsory curriculum in several schools. And, although I could easily go on a tirade against our educational system, I will abstain from doing so.

By concentrating only on the physical abilities of these teenagers from the 1950s and 1960s, there is more than enough to complain about. Many of today’s youthful trainers and self-proclaimed experts spend their days debating minor points of health and fitness. You recognize the kind. They spend their days quoting studies on three field mice to conceal the reality that they have never taught anybody and can’t accomplish anything even remarkable. They’ll spend the whole day scouring the PubMed database for evidence to back up their newest claim.

Meanwhile, we may reminisce about a simpler period fifty years ago. Long before today’s supplement-filled fitness culture, the young guys shown above flourished. These people didn’t waste their time debating rep ranges, supplement stacks, periodization models, or workout equipment. They thrived on the fundamentals. They put forth a lot of effort. They stayed steadfast.

The outcomes of their strategy are straightforward. Physical growth has always been based on hard effort and a focus on the fundamentals. While many people become lost in today’s sometimes complex and conflicting fitness environment, others stick it out with a basic but difficult strategy. They aren’t distracted by little things. They don’t let analysis paralyze them. They labor today, always ready to return tomorrow and work even harder.

Although I doubt that our country will ever see a physical education program like the one shown above, we may benefit from their approach. A basic workout regimen may be extremely effective for the ordinary individual. The program’s details are generally less important than the individual’s willingness to invest in it. A person who is extremely motivated and consistently puts out a genuine effort will succeed in virtually any endeavor.

Don’t get caught up in the specifics, and don’t be misled into thinking you’ll need all of the answers right away. Begin with the fundamentals and gradually add to your repertory. As long as you continue to put in the effort, the results will follow soon enough.

Mike Tyson’s Defense

0

Mike Tyson is the undisputed heavyweight champion of boxing, but his life has been marred by controversy. In 1987, he was convicted of rape and served three years in prison. Now, with a new documentary about him coming out, many are asking if Tyson’s past will impact his legacy.

The my defense is impregnable meaning is a saying that was used by Mike Tyson. It means that the person has an unbeatable defense.

I got an email shortly after publishing yesterday’s article from someone who questioned the value of talent in the face of tremendous power and strength. He then tried to use Mike Tyson as an example of a dominating fighter who thrived on his strength rather than his ability.

Despite my disagreement, I wasn’t shocked by the remark. Many younger boxing fans only know Mike Tyson’s one-punch knockouts through brief highlight footage. They don’t recognize or appreciate the talent that goes into such knockouts.

Mike Tyson was a defensive fighter with a lot of skill. He was often in position to land the knockout blow because of his head movement and ability to make opponents miss. Tyson wasn’t successful just because he was physically strong. He was also a talented boxer with a diverse set of abilities.

His defensive skill is shown in the video below.

Ironically, one of my friends who sparred with Tyson when they were both successful pros has identified a few guys he believes struck harder than Tyson. I’m not going to mention the names since the most of them are unknown warriors.

In conclusion, no one can dispute the potential value of power, but don’t assume it takes precedence over the importance of talent. You must practice and perform if you want to succeed in a sport. Supplemental training should not obstruct your progress in the sport. Focus first and foremost on the sport, and then add minor details to help you progress. Your capacity to tolerate heavier workloads will improve with time, allowing you to do more supplementary training. Years, not weeks or months, are typically required to complete the procedure. Either be ready for the long haul or get ready to fail.

Double End Bag Anchor

0

A new study has found that the type of exercise you perform may influence how your body responds to stress.

The double end bag anchor diy is a piece of equipment that allows users to do the double end bag exercise.

A few people have asked me how to secure a double end bag to a concrete floor. It’s conceivable that drilling through the floor won’t be feasible. You may also choose a transportable option since you don’t want the bag to be up all the time. If this is the case, a simple double end bag anchor may be made for a few bucks. For about $25, you can have a commercial option.

All you’ll need for the anchor is an eye screw and a scrap piece of wood.

Double-End-Bag-Anchor

I used a 2 x 10 inch piece of wood. You may manually start the screw and then spin it with a tiny piece of tubing (or something similar). Insert the pipe into the eye screw’s aperture and tighten until it is secure.

1631456320_949_Double-End-Bag-Anchor

That is all there is to it. Simply throw in a couple 25-pound plates. A bigger 45-pound plate may also be utilized, but I like 25-pound plates since they are smaller.

1631456321_626_Double-End-Bag-Anchor

When you’re done using the bag, the anchor is secure and easy to remove.

Sugar Ray Robinson Training Footage

0

Sugar Ray Robinson was one of the greatest boxers of all time. He’s known for his speed and agility, as well as his ability to change up his style during fights. His training footage is a great example of how to train like an athlete.

The sugar ray robinson training routine is a short video clip of the world-famous boxer, Sugar Ray Robinson.

Sugar Ray Robinson is widely regarded as the greatest boxer of all time. He possessed the ideal combination of strength, speed, and technique. It’s possible that we’ll never see another warrior like him again.

Despite his incredible abilities, however, this article is not about Ray Robinson’s achievements. Several times, such achievements have been mentioned. Instead, I’d want to draw attention to the video shown below. A short summary of Robinson’s training is shown in the video.

The video starts with a rundown of his workout routine. During training camp, he recalls retiring to bed early. He also recalls going on a run every morning and doing calisthenics, boxing, and rope work at the gym. His instruction was straightforward yet effective. There won’t be any of the modern-day devices on display.

It should serve as a lesson to everyone that the best fighter in the world lived on the fundamentals. Don’t go too far away from the sport. Nothing beats the basics of sparring, bag training, and mitt work as a fighter.

In addition, during the last several months, I’ve had many inquiries regarding what equipment is required to open a boxing club. Ray Robinson, once again, is a shining example of what is required. Fighters aren’t developed by expensive equipment. If there were excellent sparring partners inside, the finest gym in the world might be an empty warehouse. Fighters gain experience by training with skilled coaches and sparring with other fighters. The fundamentals are all that is required in terms of equipment.

I used to train in the basement of a housing complex when I was a younger fighter. We didn’t even have a ring at the time. We sparred in an open space, trying to keep off the ropes as much as possible (which were actually cement walls). Here’s a photo of me there (in a white shirt) from the 1990s.

Sugar-Ray-Robinson-Training-Footage

Two heavy bags, a couple jump ropes, a speed bag, and a medicine ball were among the equipment we used. My trainer also had a set of worn-out gloves. We’d spar, punch the bags, hit the mitts, and do calisthenics and rope training. Outside, we’d also do laps. The gym’s size was limited to that. We had some really excellent fighters in the gym at the time, despite the fact that it was as low-tech as anything you’ll ever see.

In conclusion, more than any piece of equipment, it is the people that create the gym. This isn’t to suggest that equipment isn’t helpful; it’s just a reminder that you don’t need a large facility to start a boxing gym. As the months pass, you’ll probably acquire more equipment, but you can get by with only the essentials. Perhaps the most eloquent example is that of Ray Robinson.

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does to be a champion.” Sugar Ray Robinson said it best:

Hill Training With Jerry Rice

0

Jerry Rice, one of the greatest players in NFL history, is back for another season of training athletes. He’s got a new company called JRR Sports Training Systems and he’s using sports science to help people get faster and stronger.

Jerry Rice was a professional football player who played for the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, and is credited with revolutionizing the wide receiver position.

Hill training is something I’ve written about previously. The intensity and efficacy of a hill running workout cannot be overstated. In my neighborhood, we seldom go a week without climbing the hills. I’m lucky to reside along a treacherous mountain road that climbs for well over a mile. We often take a path that is more than 2 kilometers long (almost entirely uphill).

However, we are not the first to use Mother Nature as a training ground. During his successful career as an NFL wide receiver, Jerry Rice was renowned for his grueling hill workouts. In the video below, he discusses his training.

For those who are unfamiliar with Jerry Rice, he is widely considered to be the best wide receiver in NFL history. Ironically, he’s also someone who many people questioned before he made it to the NFL. Many scouts were initially concerned about his lackluster sprinting speed when tested in the 40-yard dash. Jerry’s incredible work ethic is one of the reasons he was able to disprove his detractors. His hard ethic and commitment to the sport will be remembered for a long time.

It’s fair to assume that Jerry Rice could teach most players a thing or two. I know I did as a fan of his when I was younger.

Jerry Rice has been one of the most successful athletes in NFL history. He is also considered to be one of the most successful weight trainers. His training methods are very popular with athletes today. Reference: jerry rice weight training.

Hand Training With A Rice Bucket

0

A rice bucket is a simple device that can be used for hand training exercises. It consists of a bucket with a lid, which allows the user to control how much water they pour into the bucket. The more water in the bucket, the harder it is to move your hands around and get them out. This type of exercise provides many benefits such as strengthening grip and dexterity while also improving posture.

The rice bucket workout for climbing is a type of exercise that uses a rice bucket to train the hands. It is a very effective exercise, and it can be done in just a few minutes.

I’ve previously written on how to train your hands using a rice bucket, but the video below clarifies some of the details.

As a young baseball player, I first heard about the rice bucket. Steve Carlton, a Hall of Fame pitcher, popularized it. He credited the rice bucket for giving him the hand strength he needed to throw his tight slider. The rice bucket was also utilized by a number of other well-known pitchers (ex. Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens).

Fighters may also benefit from the rice bucket. It is critical to have strong, long-lasting hands. Not only will strong hands be less prone to damage, but the increased grip endurance will enable the fighter to keep clenching his fist round after round. When the hands are wrapped in gauze and within tiny competition gloves, a fighter who lacks grip endurance will struggle to clench the fists on contact.

The rice bucket is a low-cost alternative for manual labor.

The Particulars

I put about 20 pounds of rice in each bucket.

Hand-Training-With-A-Rice-Bucket

I use “extra long grain” rice to fill each bucket. The 50-pound bag seen below cost around $15. For personal usage, smaller bags may easily be bought. I purchase the 50-pound sacks in order to fill many buckets.

1631456388_252_Hand-Training-With-A-Rice-Bucket

In conclusion, the rice bucket may seem strange, but it is very handy and can be used nearly anyplace. If you’re searching for a cheap way to strengthen your hands, a bag of rice may be the answer.

DIY Wrist Roller

0

The DIY Wrist Roller is a wristband that activates your muscles to help you roll your wrists. It’s meant to be used after you’ve had an injury or surgery, but can also be used as a tool for prevention.

The diy wrist roller pvc is a DIY project that allows users to make their own wrist roller. It is made out of PVC pipe and foam.

Wrist rollers, which can be constructed at home, are a great method to work on your forearms. However, since you can only roll as much weight as you can carry, hand-held versions are restricted. A axle mounted variant is a low-cost alternative if you want to roll greater weight (assuming you have somewhere to mount it). The following are the instructions for this basic piece of equipment:

Wrist Roller with Axle

A debate on the subject may be found here (also courtesy of davedraper.com).

Homemade wrist roller

I finally built one of these wrist rollers lately. The endeavor was perhaps the simplest and cheapest do-it-yourself project I’ve ever attempted. I already had the rope and spring clip, so all I needed to attach the rope was a short length of PVC tubing and a hose clamp. My whole cost was around $5.

I started by cutting the PVC tubing to the dimensions of my power rack. I then used the hose clamp to secure a length of rope (as seen below).

Homemade wrist roller instructions

I then used duct tape to wrap the hose clamp. This precaution was taken to prevent the clamp’s sharp edge from gouging into the rope.

Homemade wrist roller instructions

Finally, I secured the rope’s end with a spring clip. The weight plates are held in place by the clip. Clip it around the rope after feeding it through the weights (as seen below).

Homemade wrist roller instructions

In conclusion, assuming you already own a power rack, this DIY project will only cost you a few bucks and take a few minutes of your time. It’s a fantastic piece of gear that allows you to concentrate exclusively on rolling bigger weights. I’ve only had it for a few days, but I’m already happy with the results. It comes highly recommended from me.

Thomas Inch

0

Thomas Inch was a Scottish soldier who received the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Crimean War. He is best known for being the last person to die in battle during that war, and even though he died over 150 years ago, his story still has an impact on modern day society.

Thomas Inch was an English inventor, best known for his invention of the steam engine. He was born on October 16, 1785 in London.

Thomas Inch

Three Thomas Inch novels have been added to the Sandow Plus website. The following is a link to the main Thomas Inch listing:

http://www.sandowplus.co.uk/Competition/Inch/inch01.htm

The three new listings are available in PDF format. These books are also available to watch online. For your convenience, we’ve included a few quick links below. Please keep in mind that the PDF lists are very big and may take a while to load.

Advanced Exercises Instructions – Online Version (or download the PDF)

The Inch Dumbbell is often linked with the name Thomas Inch. The first Inch dumbbell weighed 172 lbs. and 9 oz. Inch has made a name for himself by lifting this thick-handled dumbbell above.

1631456497_693_Thomas-Inch

Thomas Inch, once Britain’s Strongest Man, should be recognized for much more than his dumbbell lifting ability. He was born in 1881 and offered concepts that many people now mistake for fresh discoveries. When you go over his stuff (and the rest of the Sandow site), you’ll see that there’s practically nothing new.

One of the reasons I like Inch’s work is because of his passion in and participation with boxing. Gunner Moir and Bombardier Billy Wells are two famous combatants with whom Inch collaborated (pictured below).

Thomas-Inch

In the book Strength Secrets, mentioned above, Inch tells tales about these fighters. In the book Thomas Inch on Strength, he also talks about boxing. He even recommended non-fighters do different boxing exercises. In fact, most of what he recommended in the early 1900s would now be classified as cross-training. Inch, for instance, stated the following:

“I believe that changing the effort by devoting a specific amount of time to other techniques, such as fairly heavy dumbbell exercises, use of a heavy expander, and interest in and involvement in other sports and activities, is beneficial.”

After that, he went on to remark,

“Exercises such as jogging, skipping, Indian club swinging, long-distance light dumbbell work or wall exercise work, shadow boxing, ball punching, boxing, and so on are examples of this kind of activity. Though it has its benefits, such as improving wind and speed, none of this kind of training is designed to put on a lot of muscle mass.”

Inch also had some fascinating things to say about speed and strength, tendon strength, mental efficiency, and other subjects.

If you want to learn how to become stronger and more athletic, it’s always best to learn from someone who has walked the path and lived what he preached. Long before any of today’s so-called training secrets were made public, Thomas Inch was an absolute beast.

I strongly advise you to spend some time looking over his materials.

A video demonstration of a handmade tornado ball is included in this article. This version, however, differs from many other handmade versions in that the ball is also built from scratch. Only the outer shell is included in many handmade tornado balls (not the actual ball).

Below is a link to a short PDF I prepared on DIY tornado ball possibilities many years ago (2003).

The basketball net on the ball below is the same as it was many years ago (seen within PDF file).

The only change is that I now have Gorilla Tape around the net. For extra protection, I used a whole roll of tape. This is a permanent gadget thanks to the tape. Â It is no longer possible to remove the ball.

I chose a permanent device since I was concerned about the outer shell’s protection. This handmade ball weighs 27.2 pounds, as you can see. This is much more substantial than most commercial models. With the increased weight, a robust outer covering is required to protect the ball.

The ball was created following the techniques described in this sticky about handmade equipment:

After that, I wrapped the basketball with tape. Initially, this was done to combat the slickness of what had become a worn-out handmade medicine ball. The original basketball’s outside grip had gotten a little slippery after a long period of usage. I used Gorilla Tape to cover the ball initially, then added a layer of athletic tape for a more grip-friendly surface. This white sports tape can be seen in the first photo.

An old trousers leg has been wrapped around a piece of pipe foam insulation to make the tornado ball handle. The pipe foam contributed to the handle’s thickness. I then put Gorilla Tape across the whole handle. The handle may alternatively be made of rope (and is obviously more convenient). I happened to have an old handle from a few years ago and decided to utilize it.

Why Put Effort Into Homemade Alternatives?

I already had a few other medicine balls, so I decided to turn the old one into a hefty (permanent) tornado ball.

The majority of commercial medicine balls are very pricey. The price of the ball rises even more when you add a rope to it. I acquired a 15 pound ball and rope for over $150 after a fast Google search. For many reasons, I like my 27-pound handmade model. Obviously, my ball was a fraction of the cost. A bag of sand weighing 50 pounds costs just a few bucks. When concentrating on sheer strength, the extra weight is also beneficial (although lighter balls can be useful for other exercises). The non-bounding character of the handmade ball, in my view, is perhaps the most significant advantage. With little rebound at the bottom, you can smash this ball as hard as humanly can. Swinging without fear of a leaping ball rebounding back into your face is what this implies. For slam/smash exercises, bounding medicine balls are ineffective since it is natural to ease up at the bottom to avoid getting struck in the face.

You may swing as hard as you want with a non-bounding handmade version. This gadget is also useful for people who want to swing a hefty sledgehammer but don’t have access to one. On virtually every gym floor, the tornado ball may be utilized. However, if feasible (to prevent harming the ball and/or floor), a matting surface is preferable.

Please see the following articles for additional information about sledgehammer training:

Tornado Ball vs. Sledge

Whether you already own a sledgehammer, you may be thinking if a tornado ball is necessary. Although the two instruments seem to be identical, each has its own personality. The tornado ball may be used for a variety of different workouts as well. Simply enter “tornado ball” into the Youtube search engine to discover a variety of rotating workouts that you wouldn’t be able to perform with a sledge (Youtube Tornado Ball).

When I train at other gyms that don’t have tires for our sledgehammers, I carry the tornado ball with me. The tornado ball may be used as a portable sledgehammer nearly everywhere.

In addition, individuals who are unable to locate a sledgehammer weighing more than 16 pounds will benefit from the tornado ball. Many hardware shops (for example, Home Depot) only offer hammers up to 16 pounds. The tornado ball is one alternative if you want to go heavier.

In conclusion, I believe both tools to be beneficial. We utilize the sledgehammer and tornado ball on a daily basis.
